Sin City Effect

In this tutorial I am going to teach you how to create effects like in the movie "Sin City" using. For this tutorial I have selected a picture of  German actress, Yvonne Catterfield. You can use any photo with any colour of dress. Now lets carry on with this tutorial.

Step 1:

Open a file document and set the layer in RGB mode. Double Click the background layer. Rename the layer "black and white". Duplicate the layer (Ctrl+J). Rename the new layer "Dress".

Step 2:

Now go to channels. There you will find RED, GREEN and BLUE channels. Click on the layer in which the dress looks different than that of the skin tone and the background. In this picture green works fine. Right click Green channel and Duplicate...

Step 3:

Selecting the new channel go to Image>Adjustment>Levels. Now set the level in such a way that the skin fades into white but not the clothes. Click Ok. Again go to Levels and repeat the same procedure. The skin tone will fade and the clothes will turn black. Again click ok.

Step 4:

Now select foreground color to white. Select  paint tool with 100% hardness and color the unwanted skin part. Do not color over the clothes. Now select black foreground color and paint inside the clothes. In this tutorial I have painted over the pantylines and top.

Step 5:

Again go to Levels and Move the black button to the right. Set in such a way that the picture turns black but dont let it darken it so much because it will spread out. Paint white spots black if there are any inside the dress.

Step 6:

Now go to Select>Color Range. Click on the dress now. As you click the picture will invert. Click Ok. A selection will appear. Now select Layers and "dress" Layer. Inverse the selection (Shift+Ctrl+I) and delete rest of the skin part and all you will have is the dress.

Step 7:

Now select the back and white layer. Go to Layer>New Adjustment Layer>Gradient Map. Click on the Gradient. You will find a pallette, select Black, White.

Step 8:

Now go to layer and select "Dress" and set the blending mode to Linear Light.
